TROGLODYTE COLLECTION

My objective was to produce a collection of five ‘primitive’ lamps that show the evolutionary progress from the Stone age to the Iron age. I decided to create a collection of the same product with different functions and aesthetics to ensure that there is at least one product that satisfies everyone, in order to aim at the maximum possible penetration of my target market which is consumers between the ages of 21-35.

Troglodyte is a Greek word and means a human cave dweller. My ‘Troglodyte’ collection is a reflection of the early materials troglodytes used and the advancements that were achieved as humans evolved from the Stone all through to the Iron Age. This collection includes a night lamp inspired by a Paleolithic statue, a floor lamp inspired by the use of wood in the Mesolithic era, a table lamp inspired by pottery in the Neolithic era, a ceiling lamp inspired by the pyramids in the Bronze Age and finally a wall lamp inspired by sun and shields in the Iron Age. Each design encompasses unique aesthetics which, combined with affordability and durability, will ensure that the users will be attracted to purchasing the products.

Each design is inspired by a different era; therefore, each lamp is made out of a different material. I will be using Quartzite stone for the Paleolithic Age, Pine wood for the Mesolithic Age, Stoneware for the Neolithic Age, Pine wood coated with bronze for the Bronze Age and Aluminium for the Iron Age. These materials were fully researched to ensure that the designs will be affordable, durable and environmentally friendly.
